UD-16 specs.
The 16 basically replaced the UD18 as a 100 hp unit. Graders and mills seem to be most often be powered with the 502/525/552. I remember often seeing the stacks on graders as a kid and still remember their sound. The 18 was bumped to higher numbers but apparently too heavy/costly for many things.

Re: Lane shingle mill question. Have run 2 Chase mills one straight, standard blade, might even be an old cordwood saw blade. Other has tapered swaged tooth blade. Tapered blade wants more horse power but cuts straighter. Straight blade tends to wander a bit in harder wood and bends a worrisome amount when you get a jam.

If there is no set in the saw, the wood will scrub, the saw will heat and wander about. It is like that for circulars, bands, chains and even small saws.

Ageing logs
Green logs cut easiest, that's a fact but you "cuts what you gots". When I owned the Chase shingle mill, made most of the shingles from white pine, a real cluster if you don't let the pitch harden a little. Just saying if you have some old logs, especially, oak cut them up, the doggest looking logs give you the prettiest boards. Frank C.

The blade that is on my mill now is about .100 thick and as far as I know is a shingle mill blade. The first pic is the blade that is on there now. Notice that the teeth will draw the blade into the wood needing a Lot less power to feed. Also is thinner needing Less Power. The second pic is the one that was on there.
